Wow-been a few months since my last blog-where does time go. Just returning from my 4th Kauai vacation and was quite "memorable." They call it the Garden Isle which is appropriate, but should be "nick named" the Rooster Isle as they rule. With no mongoose on the island, the roosters/chickens have no enemies-just deal with them. With the crazy weather we have had this year I shouldn't have been surprised. 11 inches of rain in 24 hours in the Princeville area-no wonder this island is so lush and green. We hit the farmer's market the second day to stock up and all the veggies and fruit for the week-can't beat it and the freshness so don't miss out. The first 4 days were raining so had time to check out all the resorts for all of you and was glad to see most had been renovated. The Princeville/Hanalei areas are amazing and reminds me of St. Lucia and the Pitons. The road ends at Ke'e Beach which had some great snorkeling and looking up at the mountains behind were breathtaking. This is also where you catch the Kalalau trail. You can hike in as far as you want, but the trail gets a little steep and slippery as you head into the awesome Napali coast line. If you take the 11 mile path to Kalalau Beach you should plan on 2 days as it does take about 6 hours each way and you want to enjoy some falls, etc. on the way (waterfalls that is!!!). Some amazing beaches, but alot of the beaches, especially up North are not swimmable due to the strong currents. We had a wonderful snorkeling day at Tunnels Beach (kind of hard to find) and this is where Bethany was attacked by the shark while surfing, but it was about 200 yards out-so we felt OK and safe. Lots of turtles at this beach and they are so wonderful and graceful-don't touch them-huge fine if caught! Great restaurant in Hanalei is the Dolphin, but behind the restaurant is the fish market and we bought clam chowder, sushi and took back to our resort. Alot of left overs so took the rest, made a fruit salad and had a great lunch the next day-ummmm. If you are in the Poipu area and enjoy a good hot dog (who doesn't occasionally) then Puka Dog in the shopping center is soooo good and they have an island relish that is out of this world. Full for the rest of the day! One tour that is an absolute must is Captain Andy's 5 1/2 hour catamaran/snorkel/picnic cruise-just awesome. Always do a morning snorkel sail even if you don't want to get up early as the waters are more calm and better chance for seeing the sea life. Dolphins, both spinner and bottle nose where everywhere and put on quite the show for us. Lunch was excellent and they put up the sails as we went past the beautiful Napali coast line. Many movies were made on this island; Jurassic Park; South Pacific; Fantasy Island and Pirates of the Caribbean. A must for all to see this beautiful, laid back and lush island. Mahalo until next time
