NICARAGUA

I have now added Nicaragua to my bucket list with a trip not too far in the future.  This year National Geographic has placed Nicaragua on the 50 Trips of a Lifetime list.  Nicaragua is the pristine version of Costa Rica 30 years ago before the crowds and resorts moved in.  This country has been "at peace" now for over 20 years making it a safe travel destination.  I have a friend who has been many times and loves everything about this area, especially his "surfing."

There is Lake Nicaragua which covers 3089 square miles and is the largest lake in Central America AND the only fresh water lake in the world that has sharks (could have gone all day without saying that!).  You can climb dormant volcanos, explore archaeological sites, artist colonies, colonial towns, national parks and elegant colonial homes.  There is something for all.  You can take a day trip on the ferry over to some of the larger islands to explore.  If you are into kayaking (as we are), head to Las Isletas-an archipelago of about 300 islands and view the egrets and ospreys in their own territory.  There is horseback riding, coffee plantations, visit the twin volcanos (dormant), mountain biking, and can even volunteer at various community projects.

As for places to stay-you can choose from boutique resorts, eco lodges that rely on solar and are on organic farms (stay for a very reasonable rate including all food) and at the end of the day end  up in their quaint bars for a mojito, OR if you still want some luxury, head to the Emerald Coast to the luxury Mukul Resort and Spa.  Their accommodations include 621 sq ft. tree houses that are 300 feet above the beach with wrap around verandahs and private plunge pools or there are 1 or 2 bedroom beach villas.  I think a trip is in the near future-how about you?
