MEDICAL TOURISM

I have yet to work with anyone at this point that needs/wants to seek affordable health care; however, with Obama care on the rise, we don't know what we can expect for healthcare in the future.  I came across a man locally that did seek out international medical care and I will tell his story at the end.

Most people are aware of Patients Beyond Boarders and they actually track medical tourism trends internationally.  They are estimating for 2013 that 900,000 Americans will travel outside of the US for medical care.  Patient savings can be between 25-90% based on the procedure and the country.  There are about 500 medical facilities around the world that have JCI accreditation (Joint Commission International).

Some things you MUST do if considering any procedure outside of the US is:
a.) get your diagnosis from your Dr. (or possibly 2 diagnoses)
b.) make sure you have copies of x-rays, blood work, etc. from your Dr.
c) DO your research when searching for the right Dr. for your particular treatment

The end result for the local man undergoing back surgery was:
a)  he was met at the airport
b)  he was taken to the hospital for necessary blood work, etc.
c)  next day he was in surgery and in recovery had 2 nurses that were monitoring ONLY him
d)  next day was transported to a 5* hotel where he was monitored by patient services and a physical therapist for 1 week.  He stated that he was treated like a special guest

Total cost for the services were $8,431 versus  $50,000-80,000 in the US
