The Island of Martinique

This island is the largest of the Windward islands and is know as "Paris of the Tropics." If you know some French, that would help but of course English is widely spoken as is Creole. Le Marin is Martinique's yachting capital and is also know for a colorful carnival that is held every August. Most islands do have at least one spectacular carnival each year. If you go south of Fort-de-France, there is a quaint and picturesque town of Cap Chevalier which will show you a lively marina with great restaurants and a beautiful historical monument of the Jesuit style church which was built in 1766.
The Northern part of the island will really appeal to you nature lovers, hikers and mountain climbers with the highest peak called Mt. Pelee' (not to be confused with the Hawaiian Pele'). Driving from the Caribbean side of the island to the Atlantic is very impressive and is the wild and wet side; waterfalls, rainforests and mountains.
Next we drove to the Southern part of the island which is the more developed and where most of the restaurants and beaches are. An amazing site is the Anse Cafard Memorial with the famous 20 white stone effigies facing Diamond Beach. Even hurricanes have yet to harm this magnificent site.
Martinique's economy is based on bananas, pineapples, sugar cane, rum, fishing and of course us tourists. If you are shoppers best to look for local jewelry, pottery, straw goods, tapestries, and of course RUM! This is an island not to be missed and driving is very safe on this island.
