ANTIGUA

What a great island for beaches-all 365 of them! Antigua is the largest of the leeward islands with excellent year round tropical weather with low humidity (great for the ladies hair dos!).
As we tendered in from our Windstar ship into English Harbor, the view was overwhelming. The mountains, marina, slight puffy clouds in the sky-so serene and peaceful. The village at English Harbor has just a handful of houses, shops and restaurants and this areas population is quite low. We enjoyed walking around Nelson's Dockyard, the park and enjoying the history of the English Navy-a must for all the WWI and II veterans to visit. Being of English decent, I found the much sought after bakery behind the museum only to find English pasties. These are very different than what I am used to in Grass Valley, CA and also what my mom used to make, but it was good to experience them while sitting and looking towards the dockyard (very clean by the way).
It was off to see the rest of the island ans we went over to the very busy capital of St. John (not the St. John US Virgin islands). The scenery along the way was very informative and we stopped many times to see old forts and some great photo moments as well. Eric Clapton, after his son died, built a very secluded house out on the point overlooking the ocean. I believe it was his time to reflect on the love and the loss of his son.
There is just never enough time to see and experience what this island has to offer and it is one that we will go back to for a week. Sandals Resorts has an awesome resort here as well and staying there would give you some time to experience all there is to see on this island, plus the benefits of their luxurious resort. Well, back to the ship for a bar-b-que under the stars-ahhh the life!
