Dominica-Eastern Caribbean

Don't get this island mixed up with "The Dominican" as they are so very different. Dominica is located in the Eastern Caribbean and the first settlers were the peaceful Arawak Indians. Columbus arrived on this island in 1493 and named the island Dominica which is Italian for Sunday-the day he arrived. This island was overtaken may times by the Caribs, French and Britain. Finally in 1978 Dominica became in independent nation.

This island is very lush with rainforests and much of the interior is inaccessible by road and can only be visited on foot. Due to the nature of this island it has its own climate patterns. The rain will come on very suddenly, but don't try to find shelter as it stops just as quickly as it began

The Capital, Roseau is one of the smallest Caribbean capitals and the best way to see it is to take a leisurely stroll of about an hour through the town. The coffee from this island is excellent and very comparable to the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee.

Champagne Beach is the best for swimming, snorkeling and diving, but due to the pebbly beach, not the best for sunbathing. This beach is called "Champagne" from the volcanic stream released in the water causing warm bubbles to rise to the surface. Not to be missed is the rainforest areal tram and crossing the 300' suspension bridge -awesome~ The Titou Gorge was on our agenda, but it began raining and we couldn't get up to swim in the hot springs or the 50' waterfall. This island (again) is very green (eco), so enjoy the beauty and the nature it is know for.
