Traveler's Diarrhea
I know this isn't the most favorite of vacation topics, but if you are traveling to third world countries, there are a few "must do's." We have followed this each time we travel whether it is to Mexico, Costa Rica, Caribbean, etc. and even on cruise ships. That rumbling you get in your stomach and trying to find the nearest bathroom isn't what a vacation is all about SO what to do! Whenever you visit a new location, your body isn't familiar with the different foods, contaminants and so on and the results are-well-you know. Make sure you eat only fruits that you can peel; avoid water, ice; raw foods or undercooked foods. We have had many drinks including margaritas and blended ice drinks and didn't have a problem, but you be your own judge. We always take Pepto Bismol tablets and take 1-2 first thing in the morning. Also, if yogurt is available, good to eat some daily as you get the natural lactobacillus to keep your intestines feeling good. If no yogurt available, take some Acidophilus tablets and take either before each meal or 4 or 5 before bedtime. We have NEVER had any problems on any of our adventures. You can throw in some Imodium or Kaopectate just in case you get some symptoms and drink plenty of BOTTLED WATER. Enjoy the destination you are in and the local foods as well!
